I have this friend...

No, really I do. This isn't about me (for once).

My friend has two teenage sons, ages 17 and 15. The younger is paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair.

Her older son has a job and will be working at it full time once school gets out. She really wants to find some work for her 15-y-o this summer, partly b/c she doesn't want him sitting home alone playing video games all summer, and partly b/c it would be good for his self-esteem if he were able to earn some money.

Trouble is, she hasn't been able to come up with anything that he could do. If he were 16, the ADA would see that he could sell tickets at the movie theater or whatever. And the kinds of jobs 15-year-olds are doing, like mowing lawns or babysitting, he's unable to do.

So I thought I'd put it out there for you to consider. I've got a lot of smart readers and maybe some of you might have an idea. Thanks for your help.

What about an internship or volunteering? The pay would be little or non-existent but it would keep him active, there are organizations that likely would be happy to have the help and it might lead to a real job when he does turn 16.

what about a job at the public library? do you have to be 16? i'm not sure. something like that would be great though i would think: library, bookstore, etc. something where he could be assigned a spot and then help people.

Maybe a junior counselor type thing at a summer day camp?

He could be a candystriper at a children's hospital or retirement home. everything there would be ADA-approved, and he could read books or play cards with them.

i was thinking the volunteering route as well - maybe at a children's hospital or st. judes? that's in memphis, right?
